It may be winter in the north, but down south the Caribbean is sizzling with Carnival festivities, street parties and regattas. The nonstop festivities and barely-there costumes generate more than “fun under the sun” as new friendships are formed, amidst the music and merriment. The Caribbean is definitely “hot” this winter.
January is all things Bermuda. They open the year with a culinary cruise for the palate, as foodies prepare for weeks of gastronomical goodies during Bermuda Restaurant Weeks January 17 – February 3. Surely, not coincidental that the island also has a slightly more active festival during this time with a series of mile races – 10K, half marathon and full marathon – runners take their mark for Bermuda Marathon Weekend, January 18 – 20 Stretching beyond the month with a promise to “entertain, educate, and inspire”, as internationally acclaimed artists both local and afar converge during Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts, January 19 – March 9.
Jamaica celebrates the month weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, paying tribute to the island’s reggae icons, featuring international reggae artists and a taste of the island’s culture during Reggae Month, February 2 – 27. Of course, February 6 will bring special celebrations and tributes in honor of Bob Marley’s birthday. Don’t miss out on this musical journey.
Carnival is also rooted in the music. Bands vie for the coveted Carnival song/anthem. In Curaçao that song is called the Tumba and the winner is crowned the Tumba King or Queen. Check out the Tumba Festival Finals, February 8. The month closes with the Children’s Carnival Parade, February 24. The remainder of the country’s festivities take place in March.

Over in Bermuda, it’s a rousing round of golf for enthusiasts and professionals who make their way through the 36-hole stroke play individual competition for both men and ladies divisions. The tournament tees off at the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championship March 7 – 10. Back in Jamaica, there are more scantily clad patrons and revelers, as the country’s carnival festivities are underway.
